The AE Active loudspeaker is an evolved version of our highly successful, award-winning AE1 Active, first launched in 2017. Refreshed, updated and upgraded for 2026 – acoustically and aesthetically.
Building on nearly four decades of loudspeaker innovation, the AE Active combines the brand’s heritage of precision engineering with the convenience demanded by today’s hi‑fi enthusiasts. The result is a compact, self‑powered speaker system that removes the need for external amplification while preserving the musicality and accuracy that define Acoustic Energy products.
At its core, the AE Active is a fully active, two‑way stand-mount loudspeaker featuring integrated Class A/B amplification and dedicated amplification for each driver. This bi‑amped configuration ensures optimal performance, delivering exceptional clarity, dynamic headroom and precise driver control.
The system incorporates Acoustic Energy’s new signature pure-piston ceramic/aluminium cone, freshly developed for the AE1 40th Anniversary model and engineered to minimise distortion and eliminate cone flex, alongside a precision‑engineered aluminium dome tweeter enhanced by proprietary Wide Dispersion Technology (WDT). Together, these technologies provide a wide, immersive soundstage with outstanding accuracy and detail.
Designed with purity in mind, the AE Active features a fully analogue signal path, avoiding DSP and digital processing to preserve audio integrity. Each speaker houses revised dual 50‑watt Class A/B amplifiers powered by high‑quality linear power supplies, ensuring consistent, low‑noise performance across the frequency range. New for the AE Active update is a convenient auto on/off switch, much requested by users of the original AE1 Active.Flexibility is central to the AE Active design, with both balanced XLR and RCA inputs allowing seamless connection to a wide range of source devices including DACs, preamps and high‑resolution streamers. Adjustable bass and treble controls enable fine tuning to suit room acoustics and placement, offering greater control over the listening experience.
Externally, the cabinet has been subtly reshaped and fitted with a new silicone‑finished driver trim for a cleaner, more refined appearance. Finish options are high-gloss black, high-gloss white and a new natural walnut wood veneer.

The 27mm metal dome unit is designed to work in harmony with our Wide Dispersion Technology (WDT) waveguide. We’ve introduced a new rear chamber for the tweeter, significantly reducing distortion around the crossover region. This also reduces harshness and delivers a more natural, lifelike vocal range. The result is perfect integration with the mid/bass driver, with extremely wide and spacious imaging.
DRIVERS
The AE Active uses the same mid-bass woofer developed for our award-winning AE1 40th Anniversary Edition. Key to the success of the AE1 Active design is its unique pure piston ceramic aluminium cone technology. Now in its Sixth generation, this 125mm ceramic hard-anodised spun aluminium cone offers exceptional stiffness at low weight. This negates the cone flex and break-up nodes at frequencies typical of paper and plastic cone designs.
AMPLIFICATION
While the new AE Active retains its fully analogue design philosophy – including a linear power supply, Class A/B amplification and analogue line-level crossover filters and EQ – it benefits from several meaningful improvements. We’ve refined the power amplifiers to deliver greater dynamic capability, and reworked the analogue filters to minimise phase loss, resulting in a more immediate and expressive sound. We’ve added a selectable low-power standby mode with auto signal sensing for improved energy efficiency and seamless system integration. The rear panel also features an upgraded RCA input for improved compatibility with premium audiophile interconnects.
CABINET
The cabinet is an extensively braced heavyweight fibreboard construction with a rear slot port. Externally, the cabinet has been subtly reshaped and fitted with a new silicone‑finished driver trim for a cleaner, more refined appearance.
